To DIY or Not to DIY: Shed Installing Dilemma Decoded

Are you contemplating whether to roll up your sleeves and tackle that shed project yourself or leave it to the pros? It’s a common dilemma, and one of the most common things I use to hear from clients was “ahh it’s just a big Meccano set, right?” While in some ways that’s correct, what is also a fact is, not everyone was good at Meccano.
So, if you have a background in the industry or a go getting DIYer sure have a go at the construction. But be warned something’s are better off left to the professionals. Below are a few key factors to consider when deciding whether to take on the challenge, or sit back and enjoy the finished product.
- 1.Building Experience: If you’re a DIY enthusiast with ample building experience under your belt, taking on a shed project might be a rewarding challenge. However, for those without experience, especially in construction, opting for a professional is the safer choice. Avoid costly mistakes and ensure a quality build from the start. Nothing worse than needing to re order cladding, structure members or even worse, ring an installer half way through asking for help.
- 2.Time Concerns: Time is precious, and weekends spent wrestling with shed plans and materials might not be everyone’s idea of fun. While a DIY approach can stretch out over several weekends (or longer), hiring a professional means your shed could be up and ready in a day or two (depending on size of course), saving you time and hassle.
- 3.Tools and Equipment: Do you have the right tools for the job? Cutting corners with inadequate tools not only risks the quality of your build but could also void warranties on materials. Professional contractors come equipped with the necessary tools and expertise to get the job done efficiently and correctly.
- 4.Insurance and Coverage: When enlisting the help of a contractor, it’s essential to ensure they have appropriate insurance coverage. Reputable contractors will have liability insurance and worker’s compensation coverage, protecting both you and them in the event of accidents or damages during construction.
- 5.The finished product: If you are somewhat of a protectionist, then I highly recommend professional installers. There is credit in the saying “knowing the tricks of the trade” and sometimes the small investment can save you money, time and most importantly stress in the long run.
